72nd Running of a Los Angeles Tradition The Turnkey Night Grand Prix: Nov. 22, 2012 - Toyota Speedway - Irwindale, CA

in What's HOT: News

It all started 77 years and hundreds of circle track racing champions ago … In Hollywood, just north of 3rd and Fairfax, right where Farmer's Market, CBS Studio Center, and "THE" Grove now make parking something of a Ponzi scheme and being SEEN even more important than what one sees…

What started at Gilmore Stadium in 1934, a special night of racing on Thanksgiving Night in Los Angeles, has become an annual racing tradition only surpassed by the grandfather of them all, the Indianapolis 500.

And the Thanksgiving Night Grand Prix for Midget Cars (to refer to the event by its given name) to this very day, still supplies that great race with fast new drivers who've annually headed for southern California on the last Thursday in November to duke it out with the best of them in angry little beasts called USAC Midgets. Short-wheelbase, high-horsepower, slicks, tippy little bombs of racing cars with no wings, no spoilers, tunnels, turning vanes, diffusers (blown or otherwise), or just about any "aero" at all.

These are class A (for "authentic"), quintessentially high-strung oval track racing cars: four open wheels shod with fat slick tires, a tight, vertical cockpit that literally requires the driver to stand ON the gas because it's so compact, a bit of vestigial bodywork (but only enough to display sponsor's names and logos and no more) … The sum of the parts uncompromised by the need to prove anything except the single fact of who the best and bravest driver is over the 98-laps of the Grand Prix. The purse is modest by most standards, but the recognition level is sky-high.

Win Turkey Night and write your name among the all-time best in the business on the towering J.C. Agajanian Trophy named for the man who brought the event back in 1955 after Gilmore Speedway closed in 1950. The Agajanian family still heads the promotion of this tradition-rich event to this very day. Bob Swanson's name starts the list in 1934 and Johnnie Parsons, Bubby Jones, A.J. Foyt, Stan Fox, Mel Kenyon, Jason Leffler, Ron Shuman, Bill Boat, Parnelli Jones, and Tony Stewart are all there on the "Aggie" (as the perpetual trophy is nicknamed) just to name a few.

And all that tradition, competition, history, and raw racing is back on center stage in America on Thanksgiving Night, November 24, 2011 at Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, California just 25 or so miles east of where it all began.

Adding to the show on the tough Toyota Speedway half-mile oval will be the Midget cars "bigger brothers", the USAC Sprint Cars. V-8-powered bolides that share all of the modest lack of extras (like doors, painted-on headlights, and tops) and who, like the midgets, are built, worked-on, and driven with no other thought than to be the fastest open-wheeler at the facility that evening and to sustain that speed for the full compliment of laps on the docket.

But wait, there's more! No three-ring circus is complete without a third ring and (of course!) Turkey Night at Toyota Speedway has one. The Ford Focus Midgets are a division that combines the best of midget racing with a tried-and-proven Ford Focus-derived engine that's exactly the same for everyone on the track to level the playing field so that driving talent can shine forth.

Hint: there are a ton of those "youngsters to watch" that we're talking about who will be on the track on Thursday, November 24, and a whole lot of serious fans in the stands who'll either be having Turkey dinner early, or on Friday, or like the real Turkey Night fans for 70 times before them, very happy to be "feasting" on a track dog or burger, and a cold one or a warm cup of coffee and taking part in one of the great motorsports traditions … See ya at the Speedway! Turkey Night!

Brings total donation awarded through Champions Grants program to more than $2 million in three years

In their first official foundation visit to Oklahoma, reigning five-time Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson and wife, Chandra, a Muskogee native, announced the recipients of more than $520,000 in education grants. The Jimmie Johnson Foundation/Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Champions Grants are awarded to deserving K-12 public schools in the Johnsons’ hometowns and where they currently reside. The Johnsons were joined by Chris Waller, Market Director, from Lowe’s for the presentation.

“K-12 public education continues to be the primary focus of the Jimmie Johnson Foundation,” said Jimmie Johnson, co-founder of the Jimmie Johnson Foundation. “It is amazing to read through the applications and see the unbelievable needs of these schools. We are honored to play a small part.”

The Johnsons announced the recipients of the donations totaling $521,198 at a special ceremony at Sadler Arts Academy in Muskogee. Sadler Arts was one of four Muskogee programs awarded a grant. The school received $30,257.28 to extend their outdoor classroom (funded by a 2009 Champions Grant) by adding a fitness walk with experiential learning stations.

“Giving back in my hometown is extremely important to me,” said Chandra Johnson, co-founder of the Jimmie Johnson Foundation. “We have been able to fund projects at nine of the fourteen schools that comprise the Muskogee Public School system over the past three years. I am thrilled to be able to see first-hand the completed projects, and to meet the students who have benefited from them. We are eager to watch this year’s projects come to life.”

The fitness walk will include racing themed stations, a sensory garden and a technology station. Students will have the opportunity to move their bodies while simultaneously engaging their minds. The area will serve as a bridge from the school yard to the classroom.

“We are ecstatic to be awarded funding by the Jimmie Johnson Foundation for the second time,” said Ronia Davison, Principal at Sadler Arts Academy. “The walk way and STEM stations will engage our students in the critical components of mental and physical fitness giving them the capacity to be productive global citizens of the 21st Century. Not only have Chandra and Jimmie Johnson contributed to our school financially and academically, but they have promoted the importance of giving back to the community.”

In addition, the Johnsons unveiled the new logo for the Champions Grant program.

This year, the Champions Grant program received more than 80 applications from eligible school districts in California, Oklahoma, and North Carolina. Grant awards included $254,585 toward science and technology needs, $126,561 for playgrounds and athletic facilities, $56,022 toward trade-based programs, and $84,030 toward language and literacy initiatives.

“Jimmie and Chandra Johnson have proven to be great partners with Lowe’s both on and off the track as we commit to support education throughout the country,” said Marshall Croom, chairman of Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation. “We know the grants in California, North Carolina and Oklahoma will fulfill important needs in these schools.”

In three years, 53 Champions Grants have been awarded to 44 schools totaling more than $2 million. The 2011 Champions Grants were awarded to the following schools:

California
Clairemont High School (San Diego, Cal.)
Granite Hills High School (El Cajon, Cal.)
High Tech High Point Loma Village Schools (San Diego, Cal.)
Magnolia Elementary (El Cajon, Cal.)
Point Loma High School (San Diego, Cal.)
San Diego Educational Complex School of Science and Technology (San Diego, Cal.)
W.D. Hall Elementary School (El Cajon, Cal.)

North Carolina
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Academies of Engineering, Multiple Locations (Charlotte, N.C.)
J.V. Washam Elementary School (Cornelius, N.C.)

Oklahoma
Alice Robertson Junior High (Muskogee, Okla.)
Harris Jobe Elementary School (Muskogee, Okla.)
Muskogee Early Childhood Center (Muskogee, Okla.)
Sadler Arts Academy (Muskogee, Okla.)

The Jimmie Johnson Foundation and Lowe’s also recently announced another education partnership with Project L.I.F.T. (Leadership and Investment for Transformation) to provide $750,000 in grants over five years to help the public school system in Charlotte, N.C. Project funding will target four key areas of intervention – talent, time, technology and community support.

K-12 programs or 501c(3) parent group associations may still apply for a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant of up to $5,000. The spring cycle closes Feb. 17, 2012. For more information, join the Toolbox for Education Facebook page.

About the Jimmie Johnson Foundation
Chandra and Jimmie Johnson launched the Jimmie Johnson Foundation in February 2006.  Johnson, the five-time reigning Sprint Cup champion, drives the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet in NASCAR’s premiere series. The mission of the foundation is to assist children, families, and communities in need throughout the United States.  The foundation has committed more than $5 million to various charities.

About Lowe's
Lowe’s supports the communities it serves through programs that focus on K-12 public education and community improvement projects. Team MOROSO - Loara High School from Anaheim CA. won the 3rd Annual "Showdown at SEMA" with a record breaking time of 21:08 minutes. The biggest automotive show on the planet just wouldn’t be the same without the world’s most decorated off-road racer, particularly when the show is in his hometown. Las Vegas native Rob MacCachren will be in the MOPAR booth ( 43113) on Tuesday, November 1st for a live The Off Road Championship ( TORC) video chat session with all of his fans. Those lucky enough to score a pass to the Specialty Equipment Market Association ( SEMA) Show can even stick around the MOPAR booth, where MacCachren will be signing autographs from 11 AM to noon on Tuesday. All week during the show the No. 21 Pro 2WD RAM that Rob runs the TRAXXAS TORC series will be on display in the MOPAR Booth. This is the same truck that Rob won multiple races with this season and fourth place series finish, despite racing several rounds with a fractured clavicle.

More than 100,000 attendees and 2,000 exhibitors meet for four days every year in Las Vegas to do business at the largest annual automotive specialty-equipment show on the planet. Don’t have access to the industry-only SEMA Show? Don’t worry, you can always cheer for Rob MacCachren at the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series ( LOORRS) races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday, November 5th and Sunday the 6th. “This will be the first race since the off-road community lost Rick Huseman and his brother, Jeff. It is going to be tough not seeing Rick in the pits and his truck out on the track. There will be a huge void in the hearts of the racers and fans alike,” an emotional MacCachren recently commented. “Rick and Jeff were more than just competitors, they were my friends. Their legacy lives on out there when we set foot on the track, and I hope to honor their memory this weekend.”

Rob MacCachren will be in MOPAR's booth signing autographs.

When Rob gets behind the wheel of his No. 1 Rockstar Energy Drink / BFGoodrich Tires Pro2 in Las Vegas, he will be battling for his fourth consecutive Pro 2 championship in as many years. Sitting second in points, it’s a sure bet that Rob Mac will be methodical in his strategy with only three races remaining in the season.

From Vegas Rob MacCachren heads south of the border on November 17th for the legendary SCORE International Baja 1000. MacCachren is also currently sitting second in series points and can lock up the championship with a strong showing at the 1000. He has already won two SCORE International races this season, and much of the course covers terrain Rob has already won on. The No. 20 MasterCraft Safety / BFGoodrich Trophy Truck starts 10th off the line amongst 32 SCORE Trophy Trucks, so expectations are high coming into the final race of the season.

High School Engine Build Competition To Exhibit At 2011 PRI SHOW

in What's HOT: News
This December, as part of the 24th annual Performance Racing Industry Show, the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow will be holding an exhibition engine build competition featuring high school students that have participated in the 2011 National Championship.

Between August and June annually, high school students practice and prepare for the big game or the next challenge in their academic careers. High school auto-tech teams now have that same opportunity when they compete in the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge.

" This was the first year for us to compete. We received a package of info in March of 2011. We practiced with different students to find ones that were committed. I try to give the students real world experiences and this event does that for them in many ways. It teaches teamwork, communication skills, social skills and listening skills just to mention a few. Not to mention the skills needed to disassemble and reassemble the engine. School for us just started and I already have a list of students that want to try out for another team."
-Chris Overfelt, Burton Center for Arts and Technology

In conjunction with the 24th annual PRI Show, the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow engine building competition will be showing engine building exhibitions during the week. Laying the ground work for a future regional qualifying location. High Schools from the Division 2 area (Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee) are invited to participate. Divisional winners will advance to compete in the 2012 National Championship.

"We're excited to be able to feature the next generation of race engine builders in the PRI Trade Show via the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge, said Steve Lewis, producer of the PRI Trade Show. These fine young people represent the future of racing and the performance racing aftermarket. This is going to be fun."

Along with being dubbed “champion,” these student engine builders are eligible for prizes, sponsorships and support from select companies as well as scholarship money to aid in future education and training. To date more than 3 Million dollars in scholarship money has been awarded. Thus far, monetary commitments have been made by the University of Northwest Ohio in Lima OH, Ohio Technical College in Cleveland OH. and SAM, the School of Automotive Machinists, located in Houston, Texas.

The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge began in 2008 with just five schools as an exhibition and has grown into a national competition for high school students. In 2011, more than 70 teams have competed nationwide. The event serves as a forum for the future development of today’s youth for the race and performance industry. During each regional qualifying competition, students must properly disassemble small block Chevy engines using only hand tools and follow proper disassembly and reassembly procedures. This is a competition against the clock, so time added penalties may be issued.

"– it’s all about the kids. Many of us have commented that to see excitement from kids at the high school level about a possible career is terrific! In a day where Shop Class and Co-Op type programs aren’t even available in so many school districts, it is a pleasure to see instructors give their time and enthusiasm toward not just the automotive industry, but some highlight to what performance aftermarket is all about!

I think we’ve got a reverse pyramid – instead of the trickledown effect, Hot Rodders of Tomorrow affects the students from ground up and opens the spectrum of possibilities on how to get to a career that certainly most of us feel is a hobby!" - Ed Monte, MSD Ignition, Sponsor

" Just wanted to update you about our automotive program at Joliet Township High School. Since our trip to S.E.M.A. in 2009 the interest in our auto shop classes has really grown. We were the talk of the school and the community with the win in Las Vegas. Since then we had to add a third instructor which opened up 2 more classes (48 students). Our vocational class has enough interest to provide us with 2 teams for the divisional competition. Three students from the winning team took advantage of the scholarship money and enrolled in Ohio Technical College. As you know, one of those students, James Seeley, applied for and was granted a full ride scholarship from S.E.M.A. for the diesel program. Thanks again for putting us on the map with your program." - Mark Brannick, Auto Instructor, Joliet Township H.S.

To date Hot Rodders of Tomorrow has had a total of 152 teams with 1064 students participating in the competition and has been seen by more than 502,000+ people at Divisional and Championships. It's judges are a group of highly committed volunteers and is sponsored by the best companies in the Race & Performance Business.
