eBay Community of Auto Enthusiasts Participate in Transformation of Vehicle

eBay today announced the official launch of "modJOBS” an original video series for the eBay Motors website and mobile application. modJOBS is eBay’s first participant-oriented video series that chronicles the transformation of vehicles ranging from modern performance cars to vintage metal.

“modJOBS showcases what every enthusiast desires--real world projects, insights into brands, practical know-how and inspirational content.”

The eBay community of automotive enthusiasts plays an active role in the build including online discussions with expert car builders and voting on features of the project. modJOBS follows hot on the heels of last week’s launch of the “World’s Fastest Car Show” as eBay continues its goal of engaging automotive enthusiasts through both the web and via mobile platforms.

"With modJOBS, we’re providing new content each week in order to maintain the viewer’s interest while providing a platform for leading automotive brands to share their insights and knowledge with our highly-engaged fans,” said Mitch Gross, Senior Manager, eBay Motors. “modJOBS showcases what every enthusiast desires--real world projects, insights into brands, practical know-how and inspirational content.”

Hosted by Motor Trend Radio’s Alan Taylor the first eight episodes of modJOBS feature the customization of a 2012 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 from bone-stock to full-blown supercar. The series concludes with an online charity auction of the modified muscle car at the SEMA show, held November 1 to 4, 2011 in Las Vegas. Auction proceeds benefit Patriot Outreach, an organization dedicated to helping veterans with PTSD and other post-war ailments. The video portion of the experience is produced by Los Angeles-based Benchmark Entertainment of which Taylor is CEO.

“This will become a new and exciting destination for car aficionados,” said host Alan Taylor, an award winning radio and TV host and one of the most popular automobile experts in the industry. “We’ll provide easy-to-follow advice to experienced car buffs as well as to weekend shade-tree mechanics. Unlike other programs, we can link viewers directly to featured suppliers on eBay that are ready to ship whatever is needed to build the car or truck of their dreams,” Taylor explained. Participating suppliers in modJOBS’ first series include Ford Motor Company, Edelbrock, Eibach Springs, Magnaflow Exhaust, and others.

eBay Motors is the Internet’s leading automotive destination, drawing more than 14 million unique visitors each month. modJOBS’ web-based experience is eBay Motors’ latest collaboration with Triad Retail Media; the first — a content center to celebrate National Collector Car Day — was recently named a finalist for an OMMA Online Advertising Creativity Award alongside Nissan and Mercedes-Benz.

Triad Retail Media CEO Greg Murtagh explains the rationale behind developing unique content. “Advertisers want large-scale contextual marketing opportunities,” said Murtagh. “modJOBS delivers on multiple counts with the huge traffic of eBay Motors and with this new and exciting destination for car aficionados. Everyone wins.”

As the 2011 USAC Ford Focus season winds down, 17 year-old Jessica Clark is moving closer to becoming the first female to win the USAC Western Pavement Ford Focus championship. The Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle driver and Hot Rod Parts Guide/Cal State University Learning Lap professional driver has a stellar performance record for the well contested USAC program and holds on to nearly a 100 point lead.

Clark has raced both USAC Ford Focus and NASCAR S2 Sportsman in 2011 but the USAC championship has taken center stage of the last few months as it became clear she had a shot at the championship. Clark has finished in the top-three eight times this season.

“This was a good night for Jessica as her closest competitor for the championship failed to finish the second main event,” Driver Coach Ron Sutton said. “With just a few races to go Jessica just needs to finish races and she should win the championship!”

Jessica Clark’s next race in the USAC Ford Focus will be this Saturday night at Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, Calif.

$975,000.00 NOW TO BE OFFERED IN SCHOLARSHIP MONEY TO HOT RODDERS OF TOMORROW FINALISTS AT SEMA!

The Event
The event itself resembles the tear down between rounds at a drag race. The engines are identically prepared small block Chevys complete with all the goodies. Students must properly disassemble the engine using hand tools only with proper detorque and disassembly procedure. The cam and crank remain in the block. The team then returns behind their bench and when approved, begins working to reassemble once again with correct assembly procedure and torque specs, all while being viewed by judges and spectators. Time added penalties for dropped components, improper disassembly, assembly, sportsmanship, etc. will be added to ensure correct assembly. All procedure penalties are in the rule book provided to the schools at the start of the school year. The engines when reassembled should fire up and run if gas, water, and oil were added. The team with the fastest time including penalty minutes wins.

The Teams
The teams are made up of invited auto technology classes from local high schools across the country. Each team consists of five students and the instructor/coach. The individual schools set standards and guidelines for involvement. Grades, attendance and skill are all part of the making of a team. Academics, knowledge of the internal combustion engine and hard work on the part of each student is also important. A key part is the instructor/coach making this a learning experience as well as an exciting and fun event the students can look back on with pride.

The Divisional Hosts
We have developed a group of divisional "Hosts" who have volunteered their time and resources to help build the foundation of this program. Their job is to bring together all their divisional area winners for the divisional championship. If the division is undeveloped, it will be their job to develop the event in their division.

Scholarship Partners
SAM (School of Automotive Machinists) and OTC (Ohio Technical College) have supported the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge Program this past year by committing $530,000.00 each for the 2011 regular season. Hedman Hedders, is excited to announce that the "Master of the Fine Line", and 2010 SEMA Global Award winner (for his custom shift knob) Von Hot Rod, will be spending opening day of the 2011 SEMA Show in the Hedman Performance Group Booth (booth #22443.)

Von Hot Rod, has been a true hot rodder since he could hold a wrench, and is recognized as one of the world's top 20 pinstripers. Born the son of an old school sprint car racer, his dad gave up racing after Von's birth, and began building custom cars and hot rods. "I remember growing up with a wrench in my hand", says Von. "I was always helping my dad with something in his garage." Happily for all of us, Hot Rod grew up with the bug, and followed in his old man's footsteps as a gearhead and devout automotive enthusiast.

Everything that makes him tick revolves around hot rodding, but Von Hot Rod's main passion over the last 16 years has been pinstriping. His work has been covered in books, magazines and even television shows, such as, Hot Rod TV and Car Warriors. His latest project is, "Von Hot Rod's Pinstriping Circus". This is a travelling pinstriping troupe that attends hot rod shows around the country, raising money for needy charities.

"Von Hot Rod is one of the world's most respected and revered pinstripers. I mean, the guy even has his own action figure in Japan." quips Hedman Performance Group V.P. of marketing, Marc Lewis. "In all seriousness though, Von Hot Rod, is an iconic name in the hot rod world. We couldn't think of a better way to unveil our line of quality, old school hot rod headers and engine products at this year's SEMA Show, than by aligning the HP Group with a quality, old school hot rod artist like, Von Hot Rod."

Von Hot Rod, will be in the Hedman Performance Group Booth (SEMA Booth # 22443) all day on Tuesday November 1st, 2011. Hot Rod will pinstripe your favorite possession, free of charge, making it even more special or even more collectible.

Edelbrock Special - Hot Historic Auction Item at Monterey

Taking place the same weekend as the famed automotive week festivities, the Monterey Auction is considered one of the highlights of the RM Auctions calendar, continuing to attract discerning collectors and enthusiasts from around the world. Of particular interest to our readers, this year's event includes the famed '29 highboy roadster that was owned and raced by Edelbrock employee, Bill Likes.

In the early days of hot rodding, Vic Edelbrock, Sr. created a line of speed equipment for Ford and Mercury flathead engines out of his machine shop…still a favorite among many hot rodders to this day. While he enjoyed racing at the dry lakes during his spare time, Vic also encouraged his employees to compete as well. In the early ’50s, Bill Likes, one such employee, became a tough competitor in his ’32 highboy, on which in 1951 he replaced the ’32 body with a ’29 Model A.

Bill Likes set thirteen world land-speed records in his highboy roadster. He set a Russetta “A” Roadster record of 148.760 mph, and at Bonneville in ’51, Bill brought a de-stroked Class “B” flathead setup, and Vic Edelbrock, Sr. provided a bored-and-stroked “C” Class engine. Running on methanol, Likes set four world records on the salt, with a top speed of 153.583 mph in the B Roadster Class. Later Likes tried his own nitro-methane fuel mix, which he soon began selling to others. In 1957, Likes retired the ’29 from racing and eventually converted the roadster for street use. He enjoyed many years of hot rodding with his car club, the Screwdrivers, in the Los Angeles area.

After the roadster had been stored away for several decades, the current owner, Larry Tarantolo, and his crew recently restored the Edelbrock Special to its 1951 version, which still maintains many of the original parts. It is the quintessential dry lakes hot rod, with its A roadster body perched atop a '32 chassis, Deuce grille shell, stock hood and steelies fitted with bias ply and dirt track tires.

Flex pipe headers run beneath the frame rails just as they did in 1951. A Halibrand quickchange, '39 Ford teardrop taillights and an open license plate area make up the rear end. The white tonneau cover improved the aerodynamics and streamlined the body, and was re-created for the restoration.

The highboy is powered by a 259 cid 1949 Ford flathead V8, with reproduction, early block-style Edelbrock heads and a 3x2bbl carb intake along with a Harman and Collins camshaft.

Some of the original components of the roadster that remain are the seat belts, re-upholstered bomber seats and tape-wrapped steering column. Aftermarket Stewart Warner gauges were added to complete the overall early dry lakes racing aesthetic.

Included in the auction of the roadster is an over 400-piece archive of historic material. A Class “C” flathead V8, and the original tonneau cover, tow bar, and fuel tank will be auctioned with the car, along with many trophies, programs, timing tags, catalogs and original photographs.

The estimated auction price is between $350,000 and $450,000.

SALUTE to SEMA NIGHT at the SPEEDWAY

Set to correspond with the annual Specialty Equipment Manufacturer's Association Installation Banquet and Gala Fundraiser on July 29 in Long Beach, the management of Toyota Speedway in Irwindale has invited all of attendees and their families out for a great night of NASCAR racing on Saturday, July 30 at the track that they call: "LA's Half-Mile Superspeedway".

"We've been SEMA members since before we opened our gates thirteen years ago," said Bob DeFazio the facility's VP/General Manager. "Hundreds of SEMA members have visited the Speedway over the years, but our owner Jim Williams and I thought that this would really be a great opportunity to invite all the members that are in town for the Installation Banquet on Friday to come out the Speedway on Saturday night to see some great NASCAR short track competition."

And that full night of NASCAR short track racing will kick off with the always entertaining Lucas Oil Slick Mist Super Late Models where Rod Johnson Jr. of Canyon Country leads Ryan Partridge from Rancho Cucamonga 232 to 218. Johnson has won four of the five races in the tight 10-race championship 2011 series with Partridge glued to his back bumper for three of those. Race (yes, his real name) Liberante from Quartz Hill is only 4 points shy in third, Kevin Thompson (who commutes in from Conroe, Texas for each race) is but 6 point behind him, and Corona's own Jason Patison (who had a tough race last time out at Irwindale in a spectacular wreck going into turn 1) is fifth, only 10 points behind Thompson at 198.

The King Taco Super Trucks will feature a two-truck battle that, after eight hotly-contested races sees Santa Clarita's Connor Cantrell leading Rancho Cucamonga's Ryan Partridge by a scant 8 points (366 to 358). Cantrell has yet to finish in the first slot, but that's not for lack of trying. Hanging right in there, with two wins so far this season, Todd Cameron of Monrovia is well within striking distance at 336 in third.

The spec series Langer's Juices S-2 racers have run five races so far and Andrew Anderson of Lancaster has 244 points in the bank, but LaVerne's Young Andrew Porter is right there in his draft at 238 so there's no way to cruise and collect for either of the two young "shoes". Just to make the racing more interesting Malibu's Austin Dyne and Winnetka's Mike Colato are locked up, tied in third place, at 198 each.

(Yeah, we know that this release is getting a little repetitious competition-wise, but that's the standard deal at Toyota Speedway where high-speed competitiveness is the rule, not the exception.)

So ..... Rich DeLong III (again after 5 races) has an 8-point lead over Curtis White (272 to 264). Rich is from Santa Clarita and Curtis is from Norwalk and both of them are racing in the Vista Paint Super Stocks on Saturday. Just to make the point Gerritt Cromsigt, the veteran racer from Saugus is just 4 points behind White at 260!

Also on the cars are the Ken Porter Auctions Open Comp cars on the Speedways' tight, tricky, technical third-mile, where technique trumps raw horsepower, where the "high line" is a greased tightrope and going low is still the fast way to the finish.

Toyota Speedway and Event Center opened on March 27, 1999 and has become one of the premier NASCAR Home Tracks in the country. Featuring virtually every aspect of stadium-style motorsports competition, the facility is sparkling clean, family-friendly and features a unique money-back guarantee that refunds any fan's ticket price if they are not 100% happy with the show. Located near the top of the 605 freeway in Irwindale, California; the track is easy to get to from just about anywhere in southern California.

LIVE AND LOCAL NASCAR … SATURDAY NIGHTS AT THE SPEEDWAY!

Racing starts on-the-dot at 7PM.

SALUTE THE TECHNICIANS WHO KEEP US GOING TOO:
In addition, and coming at a great time (while many SEMA members are on site), the track will also offer a special night for on site guests to learn more about the work of auto repair mechanics and technicians. A number of special informational display will explain what it takes to become an well-paid automotive technician or mechanic and the satisfying sort of career that it can be.

ABOUT SEMA: A love for cars, trucks and SUVs is the motivating force behind the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). This trade association consists of a diverse group of manufacturers, distributors, retailers, publishing companies, auto restorers, street-rod builders, restylers, car clubs, race teams and more. SEMA members make, buy, sell and use all kinds of specialty parts and accessories to make vehicles more attractive, more unique, more convenient, faster, safer, more fun and even like-new again. The companies that founded SEMA - and the entire specialty parts and accessories industry, for that matter - were started by people who loved cars and trucks and turned their hobby into a career. Most people in the industry today still feel this way. That's one of the things that makes SEMA and its members unique.

Fans are invited to come on out and meet some to the motor industry's finest ... the the Speedway.

William Fichtner Wins Star-Studded Celebrity “KIDS AGAINST CANCER” Stock Car Race

Irwindale, Calif. In front of a standing, cheering, near-sellout crowd Saturday night, well-known TV and film actor William Fichtner went wire-to-wire in the first-ever Justice Brothers Celebrity Stock Race on Toyota Speedway's second annual "Kids Against Cancer Night".

Fichtner was chased to the finish line in the 15-lap celebrity main event by the other celebrity heat race winner, Frankie Muniz, with Mark-Paul Gosselaar coming on fast only a car length and a half behind the first two. Fans, who were on their feet on the racetrack earlier to greet, meet, and get autographs from the celebrities, were on their feet again in the grandstands for at least 14 of the 15-lap race as the clebs made like seasoned stock car drivers lapping the fast Irwindale half-mile at near-record speeds.

Located almost in the shadow of the Hollywood sign, Toyota Speedway, with the invaluable help of associate partners like the Toyota Dealers Association, Toyota Racing, Highpoint Racing, Justice Brothers Products, DJ Racing Equipment, The Racecar Factory, King Taco, KABC7 and KTLA5, put on the first banked oval equivalent of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach's annual celebrity race over that famed city streets course. And the fans packed the stands to see this one too!

Among this year's driving participants were: Local TV news and weather people Dallas Raines, Jessica Holmes, and Mark Kriski. Actors Fichtner, Muniz, and Gosselaar were joined by Skeet Ulrich, Kim Coates, Peter Shinkoda and Christopher Knight, along with MTV/radio personality Riki Rachtman and 17-year old pro driver Jessica Clark who drove the "Team Jessica KTLA5" S-2 NASCAR-style entry for Holmes. Adding to the flavor of the evening, the flagman for the Indianapolis 500, Paul Blevin, took the starter's stand to give the fans (and the driver's) a master course in waving the racing colors.

All of the monies raised through ticket sales, contributions from the Speedway and the Dealer's Association, as well as from a silent auction of over one hundred incredible sports-memorabilia items from racing as well as from local professional sports teams such as the Angels, Lakers, and Kings, will go to support the fight against pediatric cancer.

"This event went over so well because of the hard work and generosity of a whole group of wonderful people," said Speedway GM Bob DeFazio. "On behalf of our hard-working track staff I want to thank everyone who contributed so much in so many ways to this great cause and invite them all back here to participate in next year's 'Kids Against Cancer' event.'

COME ON OUT NEXT SATURDAY JULY 30th!
The track's gates open to the pubic at 4PM and at 5:45 everyone is invited right down on the track to take part in the Speedway's special time to meet the drivers, see the cars up close, get a snapshot or two, the autograph of a favorite driver and just generally mix and mingle in the pre-race party that we call the King Taco On-Track Autograph Session. Fans are reminded to bring the kids and not to miss this no-extra-charge unique part of the special fan experience at the Speedway!

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Courtney Hallowell who passed away yesterday at a young age. Courtney had a distinguished career in automotive and motorcycle journalism most recently serving as the editor of DRIVE! Magazine.

Halowell made his mark in automotive journalism at a young age on the staff of Mini Truckin’ magazine. He went on to serve as editor or associate editor of many industry publications such as motorcycle magazines, World of Rods and DRIVE!

Beckett Media Group’s Editorial Director Travis Noack, Halowell’s coworker and dear friend remembered Halowell as “A man who made me laugh, smile and strive to be the best at everything I did. Courtney and I shared a love and passion for custom trucks and hot rods and the passion for making magazines. The memories I have with Courtney and his humorous nature I will always hold close to my heart. R.I.P. TITO”

Dick Dixon and staffers at the Hot Rod Parts Guide truly recognize the natural creative writing skills of Courtney. A professional with snappy charm, a leader of the wit for grabbing at a rodding story angle, and a gentleman. Long live his memory.
